Fire Safety Team Conducts Multi-City Homeland Security Study Online with Citrix GoToMeeting

SANTA BARBARA, CA – November 13, 2007 – Staying in touch during a project funded by the Department of Homeland Security was critical for the FIRE 20/20™ team assigned to research firefighter and civilian safety in multicultural communities across North America earlier this year. Citrix® GoToMeeting® software from Citrix Online, a division of Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CTXS), made it possible for researchers to share field data and compare notes at any time by meeting online instead of in person. Using their PCs or laptops and an Internet connection, the researchers could securely show each other their findings. By traveling less, yet being able to meet whenever necessary, the eight-member project team saved precious time and resources while staying on deadline.

FIRE 20/20 is a research and education nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting fire and emergency medical services stakeholders to recruit and retain a qualified, inclusive, competent fire and EMS workforce by the year 2020.

“Using Citrix GoToMeeting, our team could meet online with a few clicks of the mouse and work on documents, share data, view PowerPoint presentations and make group decisions in real time,” said Larry Sagen, director of FIRE 20/20. “Without the Citrix Online service, we simply would not have been able to conduct regular meetings during our year-long research phase because of the costs and time involved with flying all over the country. GoToMeeting enables us to be more productive, achieve consensus and meet our tight deadlines for this important Homeland Security project.”

In addition to special assignments, Sagen uses Citrix® GoToMyPC® on a regular basis to remotely access his home PC from the road. He’s able to view and operate his office PC from any remote location, making it easy to send and respond to e-mail, transfer files and have full access to all of his documents and applications including the ability to hear audio files – just as if he was seated at his office computer. Peace of mind and security are also benefits. GoToMyPC allows Sagen to eliminate the risks of a lost or stolen laptop, since sensitive data, important files, critical programs and applications remain on his office desktop PC.

“The Citrix Online solutions are exceptionally easy to use, even for people on the team who are not tech-savvy,” Sagen continued. “For example, they love the GoToMeeting feature where they get an e-mail invitation, click on the link and they’re in a Web meeting. It couldn’t be simpler.” Sagen appreciates the chat feature that allows him to communicate one-on-one with a participant while a general meeting is in progress.
All You Can Meet™ flat-fee pricing provides an unlimited number of meetings at any time and of any duration, so there are no overage charges. Invited attendees participate in meetings for free and do not need to have GoToMeeting on the computer they’re using.

FIRE 20/20’s (www.fire2020.org) research study will provide insights to the fire service about what fire departments need to do to be safe and effective in serving customers in multicultural communities. Issues the team investigated include: the changing role of firefighters, who are now also first responders for medical emergencies and public health issues such as pandemics; new requirements for diversity to meet multicultural community needs; and new skills to support changing demographics such as the aging population. The research team, whose skills included firefighting, community organization, research and social work, covered four metropolitan areas: Milwaukee, Seattle, Austin and Calgary.
