Citrix Online, Coursey and Tier1 Research Lead SIIA 2007 Debate on Software-as-a-Service: HyperGrowth Model or Hype?
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
April 17, 2007
“Forget about Software – SaaS is about the Last ‘S’ as in SERVICE”
Traditional software models are breaking, virtual businesses are as real as the ‘Net, and six billion customers around the world are up for grabs. In a revolution unparalleled since telecom deregulation: start-ups, tech titans, investment bankers and industry leaders are betting – big – that software-as-a-service (SaaS) in all its permutations and Web services are the new world order in which the customer rules. Who will thrive? Who will not? And – most importantly – why?
At the Software Industry and Information Association’s (SIIA) S4 strategy summit in San Francisco today, on a panel entitled SaaS: Hyper-Growth Model or Hype, Mike Mansbach, vice president of product marketing and business development at Citrix Online, a division of Citrix Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CTXS) addressed these issues in a debate between two of the industry’s most dynamic thought leaders, David Coursey, president of David Coursey Consulting, Inc., and Mike Mankowski, vice president and lead analyst at Tier1 Research.
“Beyond a delivery platform, what are innovators and traditional players doing to maximize the new on-demand capacities of the Web to put the customer at the heart of every business and technology decision?” said Mansbach.
“SaaS is a seismic change in the software business,” said Coursey. “It used to be that big software companies had their customers by the throats. Now it’s the other way around. Subscription-based products, such as Citrix GoToMyPC and GoToMeeting, let customers decide how much they want to buy and then purchase only what they need, when they need it. This gives customers options and keeps vendors honest,” Coursey added.
It’s the User Experience that Matters
“Forget about software – SaaS is about the last ‘S’ in SERVICE,” said Mankowski. “SaaS isn’t about software any more, it’s about delivering business and consumer functionality to end users.”
Throughout the afternoon, prominent business and software executives, financiers and thought leaders discussed the strategic impact of SaaS as not only a model for delivering software, but also its capacity as a change agent. “SaaS challenges the way we define, organize and develop our business relationships,” said Mansbach. “Once static, now highly dynamic, service providers have the opportunity to work with customers in real-time to understand what customers need, deliver a simpler, better service that really matters, and disrupt the status quo with innovation that enables any size business to evolve, grow and thrive within this brave new ecosystem.”
